The Chernivtsi Center of Traumatology and Orthopedic (the Swedish-Ukrainian center Angelholm ) was established in 1998 on the initiative of the specialists from Bukovinian medical academy, representatives of the charitable Swedish organization “Riverside” and orthopedic surgeons from the city of Angelholm (Sweden). The main purpose of the establishment was to widely introduce the modern methods of treating orthopedic diseases into the medical practice of Ukraine, giving the opportunity to diagnose and treat the orthopedic diseases according to the modern world standards.

Nowadays our medical establishment is the leader in the field of the hip and knee joints replacement. It was here that the artificial hip and knee joints of the “Srtyker” firm (the world’s leader in orthopedics) and joints of the known company “De Puy” were implanted for the first time in Ukraine. In 2009 surgeons of the clinic, led by the chief surgeon Yaroslav Vasylchyshin (Honored Doctor of Ukraine, the expert on the endoprosthesis replacement, candidate of medical Sciences), implanted the artificial joint of the Swedish firm “SULZER”. Cementless femoral stem of the joint “Zweimuller” has become legendary in the orthopedics and today is considered the “golden standard” of the cementless fixation of artificial implants.

Patients who turn to the Swedish-Ukrainian medical center “Angelholm” are surrounded by the attention and professional care from the very moment they walk in. Full medical examination of the patients (modern laboratory diagnostic) is provided by our partners – German-Ukrainian laboratory “Bukintermed” (all methods of laboratory diagnostics in one hour). During the hospital stay the clinic provides patients with high quality medical supplies, highly professional nursing, complete and balanced nutrition.

Special methods of surgical intervention, introduced by our Swedish colleagues (professors Bengt Sturesson, Herbert Fransen and Lars Volfmann) allowed to implant artificial joints for those patients who were denied surgery at other hospitals (patients with hemophilia, a missing lung or kidney, patients who have had three heart attacks and coronary artery bypass surgery). We have conducted surgeries on the patients of all ages, ranging from 14 to 99 years old. Thanks to our specialists’ agile skills we are able to conduct these surgeries in just 30-45 minutes with minimal blood loss. The very next day after the surgery patients are able to walk, relying on the operated leg

Orthopedic surgeries, especially artificial joint implantations, require sterile air in the operating-room in order to prevent the risk of infection of the tissue around the joint, which leads to the implant becoming loose and unstable. The operating-room is equipped with a unique ventilation system of air sterilization, provided by the “Airsonnet” company (Sweden), which purifies the air, ensuring there is not a single microparticle of dust over the operating table and surgical team (dust is a carrier of microorganisms). There is no risk of suppuration of a wound after the surgery, thanks to this air purification system, leading to excellent results of our surgical interventions.

The range of services offered by Swedish-Ukrainian medical center “Angelholm” today is essentially increased: diagnostics, surgical and outpatient care, rehabilitation.

Our clinic specializes in primary and revisory endoprosthesis replacement of knee and hip joints. – The artificial joint implantation is often the only way to prevent disability and musculoskeletal system disorders. We were the first in Ukraine to implant the artificial knee joint of the model “Scorpio” and coxofemoral joint “Exter” by the Stryker’s concern, as well as the hip joint ASR of the De Puy’s company, confirmed by all the relevant certifications. Endoprosthesis surgeries are conducted extremely fast (replacement of the hip takes 30-60 minutes, the knee – 40-70 minutes) with the help of our experienced surgeons.

Surgical treatment of fractures,one of the leading services of Swedish-Ukrainian center “Angelholm”, is carried out according to the modern medical methods. Research and clinical practice of the recent decades have given confident evidence that the usage of metallic intramedullary fixators is one of the most promising methods of treating severe fractures and their consequences. Professor Rublenyk I.M. (Honored Doctor of Ukraine, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), our clinic director, has developed and patented a unique method of large tubular bones treatment, which has no analogues in the world medical practice, as early as 1970s.

Our specialists use effective surgical and non-surgical methods in the treatment of the intervertebral hernia:

  • epidural catheter method is an effective non-surgical method of treatment which releases the pain by inserting catheter (without cutting the skin) into the herniated disc;
  • microsurgical decompression of the spine tands for releasing the pressure from the nerve and removing the hernia surgically;
  • stabilizing spine surgeries are carried out when there is a dislocation of vertebras, narrowing of the spinal canal, compression of separate nerves or intense back pain;
  • transcutaneous nucleotomy is a safe and low-traumatic surgical treatment of herniated discs;
  • endoscopic spine surgery is a surgical treatment of hernia, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis and other spinal problems.

The advantages of these methods are low traumatism, reliability and high results of treatment

Arthroscopic and ligament plastic surgeriesare widely used in the medical practice of the Swedish-Ukrainian medical center “Angelholm” for treating knee joint diseases. Arthroscopy is method of diagnostic and treatment, characterized by minimal traumatism and high accuracy of diagnostic. The surgeon examines the internal structure of the joint (cartilage, ligament, etc.) in details during the surgery; finds the damaged tissue and carries out the necessary treatment.

In addition we conduct some other types of orthopedic surgeries at “Angelholm”:

  • the correction of the axis and length of the limb;
  • treatment of “false” joints;
  • corrective surgery for leg and foot deformations;
  • surgical treatment of benign tumors of bones and joints.

The links in our technological chain of operations are perfectly worked out, which allows for a significant improvement in the quality of surgical interventions, as well as minimizing their durations.

Among other services we provide membrance plasmopheresis procedure – highly effective method of blood purification on the cellular level for the patients with intoxications of the organism, allergies of different origins, autoimmune and neurological diseases, rheumatism, peritonitis, toxemia and others.

The interventional cardiology ward was established at the Swedish-Ukrainian center “Anleholm” in 2012. Thanks to the cooperation of Swedish and German specialists with the center’s cardiologists, as well as the installation of a new angiograph, we are now able to conduct coronary stenting (routinely and urgent) and angiography here in Chernivtsi.

These qualified diagnostics are performed at “Angelholm”:

  • Magnetic resonance tomography(MRT) - high-precision modern and safe method of brain, joints and spine diagnostics;
  • Computed tomography (CT scan) – the diagnostic method that gives a clear accurate image of all organs and tissues in layers;
  • Densitometry – a diagnostic method that allows determining the mineral density of different parts of the skeleton, diagnosing and treating osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures;
  • Ultrasonography;
  • Ultrasonography;
  • Orthopedic foot modeling.

Over the years of its work, Swedish-Ukrainian center “Angelholm” has become known not only in Ukraine, but also far beyond its borders. Due to the high professionalism and heartily attitude for their duties, the staff of the center is well respected among the patients who have found salvation and understanding here and were able to return to their full lives. As we use new technologies borrowed from Swedish and German surgeons, modern medicaments and materials, we are able to successfully combine professional surgical treatment and individual approach to each patient.

The virtuoso work of the surgeons of the clinic, the coordinated cooperation of administrators, junior and secondary medical staff, the responsible attitude of the team to their duties, a strong material and technical base, modern equipment and good conditions of stay give positive results of treatment.
