Hallux valgus

One of the most common diseases of the ankle joint, especially in women, is a consequence of transverse flat feet, the so-called "valgus" (lateral) deviation of the first toe "hallux valgus" (hallux valgus).

Valgus deformity (hallux valgus) is this distortion plyusnefalanhovoho joint where the big toe deviates towards its neighbors. In the people this disease is considered as a lump or a bone on a leg. It should be noted that this defect of the foot carries not only cosmetic inconvenience, but also brings a person many problems with wearing shoes.

Hallux valgus is the most common orthopedic pathology and is more common in women.

The formation of "bumps on the legs" is as follows. Initially, the disease disrupts the balanced function of ligaments, tendons and muscles of the foot, later there are changes in the bones and joints. Externally, deviations in the shape of the foot ("bumps on the feet" or "ankles") gradually progress, a stable fixed deformation is formed. As a result of weakening of some form-forming elements of the foot, the anterior part expands, transverse flatfoot is formed, the angle of deviation of the first toe increases, a bump appears in the area of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. The first finger displaced outwards presses on the second finger, the last is bent and fixed in the wrong position (the hammer-shaped finger turns out). This is a typical picture for valgus deformity of the foot (Hallux valgus). Transverse flat feet can be accompanied by pain in the foot when walking, usually associated with inflammation of soft tissues, the formation of calluses, abrasions of the skin and other causes.

Causes of valgus deformity of the feet.

There can be several reasons for the ankles on the legs. This is both a hereditary possibility and an inflammatory process in the joints and ligaments. Complications in the form of protruding bumps on the feet can give such foot problems as flat feet, clubfoot. Well, the most common cause of valgus deformity of the feet in young women is wearing fashionable, but extremely uncomfortable narrow shoes, or high-heeled shoes. Constant curvature of the foot in one place leads to the formation of bumps. Such protruding bones eventually become extremely painful.

Therefore, the causes of valgus deformity of the feet are:

  • transverse flatfoot
  • genetics
  • endocrine disorders
  • osteoporosis

The disease is based on congenital weakness of connective and bone tissues, which leads to the development of flat feet. Once again, we emphasize that the development of foot deformity is facilitated by incorrectly selected shoes. This is especially true of high heels and shoes with a narrow toe. Such shoes lead to an uneven distribution of load, which falls more on the front of the foot, resulting in deformation of this area and the development of osteoarthritis of the big toe.

Symptoms of valgus deformity:

  • deviation of the big toe outwards, gradual increase of the "ankle";
  • hammer-shaped deformation of other toes;
  • pain in the joints of the feet;
  • rapid fatigue of the legs;
  • difficulties with the selection of shoes.

Diagnostic methods:

  • examination by an orthopedist-traumatologist;
  • X-ray foot 3 - projections;
  • plantography - footprints to detect flat feet;

Complications:

In the absence of treatment, the foot joints are constantly deformed - there is chronic bursitis, deforming osteoarthritis of the metatarsophalangeal joints, flat feet; - rearrangement of the structure of the metatarsal bones - Deichlander's disease;

Prevention:

  • examination by an orthopedist for timely detection of flat feet;
  • wearing rational shoes (without stilettos, without sharp socks, made of natural materials, heels not higher than 7 cm);
  • wearing orthopedic insoles;
  • compliance with the regime of work and rest, especially if the profession is associated with a long stay on your feet;

Treatment

The treatment of this disease depends on the stage. In the beginning correction by orthopedic insoles is possible. In more advanced cases, surgery is used, and the type of operation depends on the degree of deformation - it can be soft tissue surgery or bone surgery.

Swedish-Ukrainian Medical Center Angelholm has extensive experience in surgical treatment of joints. Our method of treatment of valgus deformity is relatively low trauma, short duration of treatment and recovery. At the same time all components of deformation of the anterior part of the foot are removed, the normal shape is restored without bending the bones, so you do not need plaster and long-term treatment to restore bone integrity

The operation lasts about an hour (one leg). After the operation, the patient stays in the hospital for up to 3-5 days, followed by a recovery period (without plaster casts) at home. As a rule, patients on the second or third day can walk, stepping on the heels. Complete rehabilitation - up to 4-6 weeks.

An important advantage of this method of treatment is the ability to quickly load the foot: on the first day after surgery you can move independently with minor restrictions.

Sutures are removed 10-14 days after surgery. Swelling and moderate pain may persist in the foot for some time, so after removing the sutures to increase physical activity on the foot should be gradual.
